Don't be afraid. Reach out and take initiative!
As a sophomore in college, you realize that a majority of internships are targeted toward juniors or rising seniors. Most internships turn you away just by your college year. However for me, that didn't discourage me to keep applying for internships. After applying to so many different companies and even writing different cover letters to prove my skills, I finally landed an internship at a marketing agency back in my hometown.
This all started with cold-call emailing agencies in the Philadelphia area. My google searches consisted of marketing agencies in philly, marketing agencies in philadelphia, philly marketing, philadelphia agencies, and so forth. I went through the websites and agencies that google listed and started to use their contact form to reach out.
One day, a president from one of the agencies reached out to my submission post. I eventually had the opportunity to interview with their marketing manager. Then finally, after weeks of looking for an opportunity to learn and gain more marketing skills, I landed an internship for summer of 2019.
Shout out to Elysium Marketing Group! They were an all-women marketing agency when I interned and it was a great, empowering experience. I learned a lot about social media marketing, researching, and copywriting. I even had an opportunity to work on a mini graphic design project where I created a social media graphic for one of their clients. This project was for myself to work on graphic design skills. Another interesting project that I did was creating a social media audit of a client, where I looked through all of their accounts to see their activity, likes, and posts. This really helped me be more observant of their socials and saw what they could do better in order to better their social presence. This first internship opportunity was so influential in learning some of the in-real-life skills I need for digital marketing.
Without reaching out to agencies, I do not think I would've had this first internship opportunity!
